Mod Curio is a gallery space showcasing the work of artists Jon and Heather Almeda. Together they work in a variety of mediums ranging from photography to pottery and recycled mixed media pieces. At Mod Curio you will find classic vintage radios retrofitted with modern components, miniature hand-thrown ceramic vases and bowls, cardboard sculptures, a gallery of photography, along with a variety of other artistically designed curiosities. The couple will be combining all of their different art mediums and products into one cohesive narrative in their new gallery and storefront. Beyond showing their own work in the gallery, they will also feature other local artists on a regular basis. The Almeda’s have owned and operated a successful photography business called “One Love Photo” since 2007. They will use their retail space for meeting their photography clients as well as displaying their artwork. The grand opening will be attended by the art bus as part of the Third Thursday Art Walk. The Almeda’s have been working very hard, since they signed their lease at the end of June, to spruce up the 500 square foot space. Their white box approach lends perfectly to showing off their amazing work. Their unique offerings are paired nicely two doors up from curator Lisa Kinoshita’s Moss & Mineral shop. One could easily spend hours between the total of 900 square feet of the two shops!
Mod Curio brings a new brand of cool – and an old-fashioned spitshine – to the Theater District with a beautiful store where design is king. Jon and Heather offer a splendid compilation of art photography (they are both camera pros), hand-spun “micro-ceramics” as big (er, small) as your thumb, intriguing objects for the desk or coffee table, and colorful vintage radios that work like new. They’re upping the ante on “Un-tique Row” (that’s S. 9th between Market and Broadway, around the corner from Antique Row). I love this place! ~Lisa Kinoshita
Along with space, Spaceworks Tacoma has provided the Almeda’s with business training, one-on-one consultation, a modest tenant improvement stipend, and marketing support. Thanks to Spaceworks’ partnership with property owner Pioneer Human Services, the Almeda’s have also been provided with 6 months free rent.
