Spaceworks Tacoma is excited to announce a new round of Artscapes installations on display until the end of December 2013. Nine new installations will brighten otherwise vacant spaces in downtown Tacoma, featuring work presented by artists Nathan Braunfeld, Brett Carlson, Priscilla Dobler, Elizabeth Gahan, Jeremy Gregory, Kristin Giordano & Mindy Barker, Kelly June Mitchell, Scott Scoggin and Write@253. The range of projects is expansive and includes literary, film, performance and visual art.
A new venue for Spaceworks is in the lobby of the Old Post Office located at 11th and A Street. Six meticulous “Meta-tinations” by Brett Carlson fill two long display cases along with tin scraps showing his art-making process. And Scott Scoggin celebrates a year’s worth of poster design in ten display cases throughout the lobby in a show called “Whew!” Scott will also host a one-night pop-up show on Third Thursday, October 17, featuring live music and refreshments.
Spaceworks and Downtown On the Go (DOTG) partnered up for this round of Artscapes to transform three sides of a vacant building at the corner of South 11th and Market Street. Artist Jeremy Gregory has created a block-long mural on South 11th Street entitled “A to B”. The community writing center Write@253 has filled an alley with poetry by Tacoma children. And on Market, artists Kristin Giordano & Mindy Barker beckon, “Humans, Join Us!™” with a crew of animals, some one-story tall, on roller skates and skateboards!
The steadfast Artscapes location of the Woolworth Windows at 11th and Broadway and Commerce offers four installations to contemplate. Nathan Braunfeld presents a cross section of the Sierra Nevada with gradual moving lighting that represents the rotation of the earth. A simple and stark white installation will be transformed with color by artist Priscilla Dobler during a five-day performance in a Woolworth Window (October 14-18). Kelly June Mitchell begs “remember that you will die” while enjoying a beautiful visual sight of huge pink flowers. A “Color Wave” of cut-up political signs adorns one window by Elizabeth Gahan. Plus, across from the windows on Broadway sits The Tollbooth Gallery, which has a rotating roster of films by Tacoma filmmakers curated by Kat Ogden, on view outdoors 24/7 (well, it’s down for repairs, but will be up and running soon).
Artscapes applications were reviewed in July by a talented and devoted selection panel of: Katy Evans, Metro Parks, Post Defiance and Spaceworks Steering Committee Member; Judi Hyman, TWOKOI Japanese Cuisine Operations Manager, Downtown Merchants Group President and DOTG Board Member; Holly Knoll, Rescue Mission Creative Director; Elise Richman, Artist and Associate Professor of Art at the University of Puget Sound; Mike Sweney, ArtsWA Program Manager and Tacoma Arts Commissioner.
