“Through our eyes” StoryLab Student Showcase
Saturday & Sunday, August 2-3, 2014 – 1-5pm
Spaceworks Tacoma is excited to announce “Through our eyes,” a StoryLab Student Showcase in the Pop-up Gallery off the main lobby at the Tacoma Post Office Building located at 1102 A Street, Tacoma. This is a two day only event on August 2-3, 2014 from 1-5pm. The pop-up gallery is being organized in conjunction with Tacoma Public Library and Picture Tacoma (tacoma253.com).
The exhibition “Through our eyes” is a selection of photographs from two intensive week-long teen photography workshops at Tacoma Public Library’s StoryLab, curated by workshop instructor Jesse Michener. The student photographers will receive feedback from peers, family and friends, and have the opportunity to discuss their work. The featured students, under Ms. Michener’s direction, will be responsible for all aspects of the exhibition – hanging, staffing, refreshments, and social media outreach.
Tacoma Public Library’s StoryLab provides space and free classes for teen interested in filmmaking, digital photography and image processing, web design, voice over, music and audio production, animation. The Library’s Community Relations Manager David Domkoski was instrumental in launching the StoryLab project as well as coordinating this Spaceworks pop-up exhibition.
Workshop instructor Jesse Michener is a freelance photographer, writer and educator in Tacoma. She has taught high school drama (Spanaway Lake High School and Franklin High in Seattle) and digital photography at both SOTA and SAMI as an adjunct teaching artist. She regularly teaches day-long digital photography classes for the library as well. She is the co-producer of the Write workshops at Doe Bay on Orcas Island, a semi-annual writing retreat for 25 writers and a few NYT best-selling authors. And she currently has an exhibition running at Fulcrum Gallery, called Tacoma(253).
The Tacoma Post Office Building is a historic building located in Downtown Tacoma. In recent years the building has been renovated and now houses the Tacoma School of the Arts, USPS, Post Hall event space, and numerous artist & creative studios. Spaceworks Tacoma would like to thank property owner A Street Associates and property manager Power Property Consultants for their generosity and partnership, which makes the pop-up gallery off the lobby possible.
