Tacoma March Art Walk: Spaceworks Highlights

Third Thursday on March 16, 2017 gives you a lot to think about. All the events listed below are free, open for your participation, and within three blocks of each other! Mark your calendar and plot a walking route to add these stops to personalize your Tacoma art walk.

Exhibition Runs: March 9th to April 20th

Explore the dramatic impact of war, genocide, resettlement, and deportation of Cambodian Americans today while experiencing their cultural contributions. This exhibition features artwork by contemporary artists as well as photos and text from Khmer American: Naga Sheds Its Skin, an exhibition created by the Khmer American community and Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience. Jason Sobottka – 1120 Creative House Featured Artist

Jason is the newest tenant at 1120 Creative House. He is a professional artist and arts educator. He is Lake Washington Institute of Technology’s first tenured visual art instructor. He exhibits his paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures around the nation. Jason was awarded the Winter 2012 Faculty Excellence Award and was nominated for 2016 Foundation of Art Award presented by the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation.

His past experience includes working for Tacoma Art Museum’s Education Department, where he designed and built the museum’s hands-on art making gallery, the Open Art Studio.

Artist Mentorship Night at 1120 Creative House

Tacoma artists and art patrons mingle at 1120 Creative house. Third Thursday Artwalk, November 2015.Artist Trust invites you to join this informal mentorship and networking event that gives artists of all disciplines a chance to sit down with artists and arts leaders in small groups for casual conversations about opportunities, issues, and challenges in the arts world. Featuring artists and arts leaders: Masahiro Sugano, Filmmaker and director: Amy McBride, Arts Administrator for City of Tacoma: Heather Joy, Manager of Spaceworks Tacoma: Aaron Spiro, musician and co-founder of Alma Mater Tacoma: Patsy Surh O’Connell, artist and Founder/President of Asia Pacific Cultural Center.

For me making art is a type of meditation, and for this series I intentionally cast my focus on the wisdom of animals and a few amazing women. Each animal by its very nature has a sort of medicine to offer, something to be learned from their approach to and way of moving through life.

Spaceworks’ Artscapes program places 2D, 3D, mural, or multi-media art installations in storefront windows, outdoor spaces, and an outdoor video gallery in the City of Tacoma.
