Tinkertopia / R.R. & Darcy Anderson

1914 Pacific Avenue / tinkertopia.com
grand opening July 18, 2013

A creative reuse center opened in downtown Tacoma in July 2013! It is a destination for teachers, students, artists, crafters, inventors, makers, hackers, and tinkerers of any age in search of unique reclaimed materials for any creative endeavor.  Tinkertopia diverts safe+clean remnants, seconds, scraps, off-cuts, discards, misprints, and overstock from the waste stream, then redistributes these goods as low-cost arts & crafts supplies.  Besides selling unique art and craft supplies, Tinkertopia hosts studio/work space for birthday parties, field trips, and craft parties.  They moved in June 1, 2013, applied a fresh coat of paint, moved in loads of product from their home and storage units, and opened their doors!

Rodney Raccoon
 Rodney Raccoon Multimedia Production :: JD Davis / BYTM (Building Youth Through Music) / WayOut Kids
717 Tacoma Avenue South, Suite C / www.rodneyraccoon.com
January – December 2013
::
 We’re all familiar with the ways of raccoons – they’re clever, inquisitive and playful creatures. No wonder then, that this ring-tailed varmint is the animated mascot for educational media produced by Rodney Raccoon and BYTM (Building Youth Through Music)/WayOut Kids, a non-profit whose mission is to teach children and youth through music and multimedia. BYTM has developed the “Rodney Raccoon” character, curricula and outreach into an award-winning model that successfully involves youth and the community in social change through the delivery of information to diverse groups of children, parents and local educators.  As part of their Spaceworks Creative Enterprise term, BYTM worked on new multimedia material.  Check out their website for all the details!

Electricbranch Creative / JD Elquist, Travis Pranger & Drew Frazier
311 S. 7th Street
July – December 2012
 ::
ELECTRICBRANCH Creative is a small staffed, big idea creative firm based in Tacoma, WA. The firm was born on a cold winter’s night in 2011 after a deep analysis of a “ Fireside Chat.” Their approach is from the inside out: “it’s easy to look good, it’s hard to back it up.” This energetic startup put its emphasis on the why instead of what, thus creating a brand image and strategy that was purposeful and focused from start to finish.  After 3 months as Electricbranch Creative in their Spaceworks Creative Enterprise space at 311 S. 7th, JD Elquist and Travis Pranger changed their focus to their love of fashion and opened Feather & Oar. Feather & Oar was a menswear mercantile that offered a precise selection of men’s clothing and accessories, ranging from designer to vintage. At the end of their successful 6-month Spaceworks residency, they were able to transition into a new space in January 2013. Also featured at Feather & Oar was Black Anchor Workshop, which offers their own line of hand-made leather & canvas goods inspired by a love of the outdoors, adventure & community. In May 2014, Feather & Oar closed its doors and by June 24th JD opened a new shop at 780 Commerce St. with his lovely wife Drew called The Elquists, offering “his, hers and hair.” On July 17 The Weekly Volcano noticed The Elquists in their article “Fashion Forward Tacoma.”
