Spaceworks Tacoma announces “Study of Site and Space” a group exhibition that seeks to address the innate human connection to site and space curated by Allison Hyde at the 950 Gallery. Through 2D, 3D and mixed-media art, the artists represent varying perspectives on the relationship between architecture, memory, and the natural environment.

The architecture of a space is much more than walls, ceiling, and floor, more than the sum of the rooms and hallways – it represents the human desire for safety and comfort and is the physical manifestation of our habits and daily life. In The Poetics of Space, philosopher Gaston Bachelard writes how “every corner in a house, every angle in a room, every inch of secluded space in which we like to hide, or withdraw into ourselves, is a symbol of solitude for the imagination; that is to say, it is the germ of a room, or of a house.” Similarly, artworks in “Study of Site and Space” might seek to open a dialogue about ideas of interior space as a site for imagination, solitude, or reflection of memory. Visual examples of architecture and interior versus exterior space and landscape have been shown throughout art history for ages. From Raphael’s Renaissance painting “School of Athens” to contemporary works such as Rachel Whiteread’s life-size cast of a row house titled “Ghost,” manmade structures often stand in contrast to and in reflection of the natural world, a metaphor for our impositions on the environment and also the transformation of natural materials into a structure that sets roots to a site.

This exhibition will feature contemporary Northwest artists whose work explores ideas of architecture, site, space and place. With media ranging from site-specific installation to photogravure, sculpture, paintings, prints and mixed-media works, each artist shares a unique voice that contributes to the experience of the viewer:
