Last Monday, the City of Tacoma organized an event about the adaptive and creative re-use of Tacoma’s old and often underutilized buildings. A huge turn-out of folks of varying interests packed the 1120 Creative House to listen to presentations about 6 exciting projects currently under way:

The Station Artist Lofts. Former McKinley Police Station currently being converted to artist work/live units!
Valhalla Hall, on MLK Jr Way currently being remodeled with living up top, and storefronts below!
Kellogg – Sicker & Pochert buildings on MLK Jr Way currently being remodeled with living up top, and storefronts below!
Feast Art Center, gallery and art school NOW OPEN behind Hilltop Safeway!
Alma Mater, large music venue/art center currently underway in the former Carpenter’s Union building!
1120 Creative House, affordable co-working studio/event space in a former office building, a project by Spaceworks Tacoma opened in early 2015!

Mayor Strickland closed out the evening with a very positive message regarding Tacoma’s recent developments towards encouraging the creative re-use of underutilized buildings, and the role this plays in our economic development.

The presentations were followed by an hour of unquantifiably important networking. Be sure to watch for open houses, grand openings, and opportunities to get involved with some of these amazing upcoming projects.
