Side x Side specializes in branding and publications for medium-size businesses and nonprofits.

As participants in the 2015 Creative Enterprise Program, Holste and Hanberg, a husband-and-wife team, came to Spaceworks with substantial business experience.

Holste, a professional graphic designer for more than 12 years, had established her own design firm in 2007, and Hanberg, an editor and nonprofit guru, began participating more and more in the company, eventually transitioning to full-time in 2012. At that point, the two renamed the business Side x Side Creative to reflect their own working relationship as well as the relationship they strive to have with their clients.

What Side x Side didn’t have when it came to Spaceworks’ Creative Enterprise Program was an actual space.

For years Holste and Hanberg had been working out of their home office in a second bedroom, but as their client base continued to expand—both in scope and geography—they wanted an office space that could facilitate improved business practices. For instance, they didn’t have a space to meet with clients, so they had to conduct meetings and creative brainstorming sessions in public at a coffee shop.

“The historic Tacoma Post Office Building, with its architectural character, and smack downtown location, has a lot to offer Side x Side in taking their business to the next level” says Spaceworks Artscapes and Marketing Coordinator Gabriel Brown. “Erik and Mary are incredibly talented in their fields, and Side x Side is a real asset to our community. Our goal at Spaceworks is to assist them in polishing their business model, help place them in a space which meets their needs, and provide ongoing technical assistance.”
