We’re psyched about Dan Martin‘s ongoing Street Sign project planting positive vibes around Tacoma by way of clever, traffic-style signs re-writ with pop messages. And so are the newsies up in Seattle! We were channel surfing the other night when we caught a shoutout for Dan on a KING-5 special about folks making a positive impact on the Northwest. Not bad! But it’s not his first appearance in the Seattle media – he caught the eye of KOMO-4 last year when he launched Signs as a project of the Personal Power Company, recipients of a Spaceworks residency in 2011. (When we say “caught the eye” we mean that literally, because the signs tend to be half-hidden in dead spaces around town where observant pedestrians can spot, contemplate and enjoy them). After urging others to participate via Facebook, he got feedback from as far away as Prague and Pakistan.

Dan’s placards encourage a gently subversive community mindedness by advising people to slow down and do things like “Eat,” “Remember” and “Love as Thou Wilt.” That’s an order! This upcoming Tacoma artist is also making a splash with ingenuous projects using duct tape to surprising and stunning effect. Check out a 2011 KING-5 news story about Dan Martin here.
